REIMAGINING WORKS

Dayton Metro Library and the Dayton Art Institute
title:
CONVERGENCE
20'x10'
Wilmington-Stroop Branch Library
Kettering, Ohio
Painted, shaped wood panels that relate to
the modern geometric architecture of the
library and mimic the intersection of planes,
lines and shapes seen in Bold Endeavor by
Jon Kuhn. Layered to create a sense of
depth and energetic rhythm.
CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT I grew up in Kettering, went to J. E. Prass Elementary, and lived less than a mile and a half from the Wilmington-Stroop Branch. I always considered it my library. It was and still is a place to discover, explore, and grow. The library plays an important role where the knowledge of today and the past become the great ideas of the future. It is this idea of convergence that excites me. The point where the past meets the future, where struggle turns into success, where ignorance transforms into understanding. In the library, all these come about when the community connects and there is a convergence between knowledge and each other. In my concept, I build on these ideas by visualizing with a clean modern aesthetic the energy and excitement of these moments of convergence and change. Charles Kettering, was a great example of someone who looked into the future and tried to make the world a better place. His most famous invention, the electric starter, can be a great metaphor for what can happen in the library. One major aspect of the starter is that a relatively small motor driven by enough energy can deliver enough power to start a much larger engine. This library can continue to help be the energy, the electricity that starts to motivate and inspire the great minds right here in this community.
PROGRAM
ReImagining Works is a partnership between the Dayton Metro Library and The Dayton Art Institute to acquire original artwork for each of the Dayton Metro Library’s newly built or renovated branches. Giving creativity a central place in the “re-imagining” of the traditional role of the library, the Library is offering regional artists the opportunity to create a new work inspired by an artwork held in the permanent collection of The Dayton Art Institute. Bringing two of Dayton’s iconic institutions together, both places of discovery, inspiration and knowledge, ReImagining Works pays homage to artistic traditions of the past while creating art for the future.
